How to Find Wordpress Category Numbers

After switching to Wordpress 2.5, you may be wondering where to find the Wordpress category numbers. Wordpress category numbers are used extensively in many Wordpress themes to indicate which category titles you want to display for various post listings.

Here how to show the Wordpress 2.5x category numbers:

1. In the Wordpress Admin panel, click Manage > Categories.
2. Hover your mouse cursor over a  category name.
3. Look in the lower left status bar of the Internet browser. You will see a URL. At the end of the URL is the cat_ID=number. If you cannot see the entire URL, make the Internet browser window wider.

In the above example, the CMS category number is 17.

You can also click on the category name and the same URL will display in the Internet browser’s address field.

I have not installed it yet so I am not endorsing the plugin, just sharing information about a resource. Use at your own risk since it’s in beta.  What this plugin does is show the the ID number to the right of each category name. Note: When you arrive at the download website, the first half of the download page is in German. Just scroll down to see the English.
